Medical Interpreting

Clear communication for clinics, offices, outpatient surgery, and hospital settings.

A medical visit can be stressful enough without wondering whether you will understand and be understood. Our medical interpreters help patients, families, and providers communicate clearly in clinic, office, outpatient surgery, and hospital settings, with the care and discretion these moments deserve.

Your right to communication access

The Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable state laws require most health care offices and hospitals to provide full and equal access to their services. These laws prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities, and for many patients who are deaf or Hard of Hearing, equal access includes a qualified sign language interpreter.

Arranging an interpreter

A patient, family member, or companion who is deaf may request an interpreter at any time. Once a provider is aware that a patient communicates in sign language, the provider is responsible for arranging communication access.

If you have an appointment coming up, ask the medical office or hospital to schedule the interpreter when you make the appointment. The office can contact us directly, and if you need help communicating this request, we will be happy to assist.

When an interpreter is needed

An interpreter supports effective communication whenever important information is exchanged, including:

  • Taking a medical history
  • Giving diagnoses
  • Performing medical procedures
  • Explaining treatment plans
  • Explaining prescriptions and regimens
  • Patient education and counseling
  • Discharge and follow up plans
  • Emergency and urgent care admissions
